Lower Eyelid Surgery

A common complaint of many cosmetic patients is the sagging, puffiness, and laxity of the lower eyelids. While this is a common, normal sign of aging, this appearance of the lower lids could also be genetic or lifestyle induced.

Through a traditional lower lid blepharoplasty, the physician will excise fat, and tighten skin if necessary to enhance the appearance of the lower eyes, aiming to achieve a rested - rejuvenated look to the lower orbital area.  In a typical lower eyelid surgery (lower lid blepharoplasty), skin is also removed. The amount of skin removed is determined by many factors, and it is important to schedule a comprehensive evaluation with an Oculoplastic Surgeon (Dr. Dennis Reiter, DO) to adequately determine which approach is the best for each patient.

It is important to know that lower lid blepharoplasties have a higher complication rate than upper eyelid blepharoplasties. Associated complications can include but not limited to lower lid retraction, scleral exposure of the eye, dry eye, and double vision or compartment syndrome of the eye. A well trained Oculoplastic Surgeon understands these risks, and focuses on limiting the chance of risk and adverse effects.

As with any other procedure, during your lower lid blepharoplasty consultation, it is important to inform the doctor of all present and past medical history and medication. Your general health and safety is our top concern, and a thorough evaluation is essential to the desired outcome of any procedure.
