Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness (Glaucoma.org, 2014).  Symptoms of glaucoma can include tunnel vision, and eye pain.

Open angle glaucoma (the most common) is a chronic condition in which the fluid of the eye does not drain properly due to clogging of the drainage canals.  Open angle glaucoma is typically treated with a strict regiment of medications and continuing management by a physician.  Surgical intervention can be done to increase the aqueous humor outflow, although surgical intervention will not permanently heal glaucoma.

Narrow angle glaucoma, which is a more acute condition happens when the angles between the iris and cornea through which fluid of the eye drains, become closed off.  This can be due to swelling of the crystalline lens (requiring cataract removal surgery) or a sudden spike in intraocular pressure.  At Visione360, our team can perform an in office procedure known as YAG laser iridotomy to allow more efficient aqeuous outflow allowing the reduction of intraocular pressure.
